Although the current Abbey Hotel is a new building by Romsey pub standards,
it is in fact on the site of a much older inn,
known in the 18th century and early 19th century
as the Falcon and then as the Market Inn.
For some years during the second half of the 20th century,
the Abbey Hotel bore a sign depicting a monk,
a rather unfortunate illustration for an inn that took its name
from the nearby Abbey Church of a one time Benedictine nunnery.
If you are interested in the pubs and inns of Romsey, the book,
So Drunk He Must Have Been To Romsey,
published by the LTVAS can be purchased from the Visitor Centre.
